Quick Search

You can use the “Quick Search” box which appears on the top right corner. Simply type in a key word and click “Search Catalogue”.

Advanced Search

Alternatively, you can click on “Advanced Search”, select “Catalogue” and use one of the search boxes there. For example, if you already know the catalogue reference number of the item you wish to search for, use “Ref No” or “AltRefNo” for reference numbers found in older published works.

Your results will appear on the Search Results page. You can chose how many results you wish to view on the page by changing the number in the drop down box on the top right corner.

By default, the records in the results hitlist are presented in Ref No order. You can sort the records by Title, Date or Description by clicking on the appropriate column heading above the displayed records.

If you want to search for an exact phrase use double quotation marks, e.g. "Educational Record".

Use an asterisk to perform a wildcard search, for example, new* will search for Newcastle, newsletter, etc.

Hierarchy

Clicking on the “Ref No” of the record will show it in context within the hierarchy of its collection.

A tree structure will appear, with the option to expand or contract particular sections.

Click on a particular entry in the hierarchy browser to see the full description of that record.

To return to the original search results hitlist, use the back buttons at the top of your browser screen.

Search tip

Your search will produce most results by using the “Any Text” search box. Until we add more items to the catalogue, we strongly recommend using an “Any Text” search, or using the “Quick Search”.
