  <dc:description>The opening ceremony was performed by Lord Beeching on 4 July 1968.  The University had no hall to house the gathering so a large marque, or 'air house' as it was an inflated plastic envelope maintained in shape by the continuous use of pumps, was used.  It was erected in the central area where the Library now stands.  It could seat about 1,000 people.</dc:description>
