William Lanceley was one of 9 children of a small farmer who died early, leaving his widow in debt. 

William began work as a hall-boy to the local squire at the age of 16, his wages were £8 per year.
He describes a typical day working as a footman.
He spent the next 43 years in service, moving up through the ranks of footman and butler to become house-steward to Lord Roberts at the Curragh.    
His last appointment was in royal service as steward to the Duke of Connaught.
