She was born in Plymouth.
Her mother died when she was two years old, which resulted in her moving in with her mother's parents. 
Her father was a porter, who died when she was seven years old, which resulted in her moving in with her sister to a home for young ladies. 
She had three brothers and one sister. 
Two of her brothers were killed during First World War.

Married on the 4 of September, 1915 to Frederick John Ley. 
He was a gunner in the Army, and a very fine musician. 
He suffered a serious stroke in his thirtees which led to his right side being paralysed for the rest of his life. 
She had a daughter. 

She started working for a doctor at the age of fourteen.
She then became a house maid at the orphanage that she grew up in. 

Growing up in the orhpanage, all the girls were given a job to do, such as sweeping the stairs, which would be changed to a different job each month. 
She would attend the Church each Sunday morning, and then go for a walk around the park in the afternoon.
Each holiday, she would go to a farm. 

The autobiography discusses the author's experience growing up in an orphanage after the death of her parents. 

The autobiography is handwritten.
