Father had served in the First World War. He was born into a large family. His father was a brick layer, whose job was dependent on the weather and as such the winter brought hardship on the family. He remembers christmas were Santa Clause had run out of presents before he reached his street. He become an alter boy at his church and a catholic upbringing. Fond memories of flying a kite. 

Army - WW2

First leave from army Christmas 1939. 
Light duties from summer 1940, due to a heart weakness. 
Travelled to Singapore  with army October 1941
Taken POW by the Japanese 1942
