He had various jobs, including newspaper boy, errand boy, photographer's assistant, coal miner, labourer, fish hawker and was unemployed for a while post-war [World War One] as he had been a conscientious objector. He experienced 30 months in prison following two court martials for ignoring call-up notices for WWI.
