Born in Totnes, Devon. An only child. Attended Miss Hancock’s Infant School, then St. John’s School for Boys. Also attended St. Sidwell’s School. Attended National Schools in Exeter and Plymouth. Left school at the age of eleven.
Started working part-time at the age of nine, selling milk. Worked as an errand boy. Then started working full-time as a paper-boy at the age of eleven. Worked at the Vicarage of St. Clear. Worked at a Club. Enlisted in the Royal Scots Regiment. Served in the First World War. Retired in 1934, but rejoined the army in 1939 with the Intelligence Corps as a Security Officer under M.I.5.
The author was awarded with the M.C., the D.C.M., and the Russian Medal of St. George.
The autobiography describes what different jobs of the author consisted of. The autobiography also provides short descriptions of each part of his life such as his early days, teenage years, and adulthood.
