Father worked as a jute worker when Barnes was born. He was educated at day school and church school until age 11.
Married in 1882, with two children (one daughter, one son).
He worked as an apprentice. He worked in an engineering factory (1870-1872), later being an apprentice engineer (1872-1877). He worked as a journeyman between 1877-1891. During the years 1891-1908, he worked in various positions, predominantly being a secretary for Amalgamated Society of Engineers (ASE) of which he was an executive council member, as well as a secretary for Tom Mann. He also served as the Labour MP for Blackfriars and Glasgow (1906-1922). He was the Chairman of the National Committee of Organised Labour for Old Age Pension (1902), and the Chairman of the Labour Party (1910), whilst also serving as the Minister of Pensions (1916-1918), member of the War Cabinet (1917), and the Minister without Portfolio (1919). Notably he was unemployed in 1923.
There is an emphasised focus on the Old Age Pensions, the taxation of land values, the Irish problem and the League of Nations in this autobiography.
