Born Newfield, Co. Durham Would go back home to Dublin during christmas break from his post. Emigrated to the USA; Newfield; Oxford. and life in America [USA].
Met his wife in Oxford during his stay at Ruskin College.
When Armtistice was signed in 1919, he was at Malin Head wireless station in Northern Ireland. Malin Head W/T station was an important link in the transatlantic communications chain. Faced alot of hostile behaviour from civilians upon seeing them in uniform. Went back to work after christmas break at the R.A.F weather station. Returned back to civilian life with an offer of £25, and having eared 8/6d per day. Started his blacksmith apprenticeship however, he was not used to such hard work. Breakfast time from 8am-8:30am. Started mining at the pit to earn basic wage, and do overtime. Left his job at the pit to go work for the Cleveland and Durham Power Supply Company, as a Power Station Electrician.
Had an incomplete blacksmith apprenticeship, and had three years left to complete; when he arrived back his military post.
