Worked as a servant, before becoming a butler. The author compares his life as a servant to that of a bird stuck in a cage, deprived of liberty.
The autobiography focuses on the author's day-to-day activities, as well as decribing his work days. The autobiography also describes what the role of a servant and a maid consists of. The autobiography was created to give a reader an insight into what the life of a servant is like.
