She had two brothers. Her mother married a widower, who then died when she was 5 years old. Her step-father had four grown children from his first marriage. She grew up in a village, in Wales.
She married at the age of 18.
She left school in 1900, at the age of 12 to help with selling milk.
As a child, she would attend singing school, Band of Hope, and competitive meetings which took place on Saturday evening. She attended Sunday School. She enjoyed playing hop-scotch, skiping and buttons with other girls. She went to the movies with her friends, which they called 'living pictures'.
The autobiography focuses on the author's childhood before she had to leave school to start working. The autobiography also focuses on living in a village, and what it was like growing up there for the author.
