His father came from a large family of an agricultural background, whilst his mother was a coachman’s daughter.
His parents previously had two daughters who died before he was born.
Parents separated when he was young, so his mother had to earn a living.
He was initially in the care of his mother’s aunt, followed by his father’s eldest sister from the age of five years old, in 1886, all of which left him unhappy.
He went to National School until thirteen and was troublesome, yet smart; he also attended Congregational Sunday School around the same time.
Attended evening classes in shorthand and French, and in 1904 he passed the final exam of Chartered Institute of Secretaries.

Married in 1905 with 5 children.

He had worked part-time at his uncle’s hairdressing saloon at the age of 11.
He worked as a Post Office learner unpaid, upon finishing school.
Started earning at 14 years old, as an office boy at the local gas works, later entering the secretarial career.
He obtained a part-time lecturing post at Birmingham Commercial College.
Wrote the personal correspondence for a Liberal Candidate for Parliament.

He was interested in art, reading and self-education from a young age.
He was cycling for forty years, with his “cushion-tyred” bicycle.
He wrote poetry, essays and even a novel on the Suffragettes.
A passion for speaking and business, as highlighted through his part-time post.
An athletic individual, he was involved in various choral societies including amateur theatrical.
A teetotaller.
