With his grandmother earning and his father working with a team handling crops, he was often left to roam.
Eventually, they all moved to Woodland Cottage, Falstaff Street in Greenfields.
Attended Coton Hill Infants’ School.
He was in third standard when he lost his Grandfather to pneumonia.

As a child he would do errands for his grandfather on the farm, and notes his ‘serious job in life’ was ‘stirring of the blood of the annual pig’.

He enjoyed roaming about Coton Hill fields as a child.
