Born in Preston, Grew up attending church and Sunday School. Attended St. Saviour's Infant School in Preston and then attended Grimshaw Street School. Mother worked in the Cotton Mill, spent a lot of time with his aunt, while his mother was at work. Arm amputated after break in winter 1913-14. Father died in 1914.
