Childhood: She remembers her first memory of life; the sun shinning on her face, while she observes the room around her. At the time of the great fire her grandfather carried her on his shoulder down to the cellar belonging to her great aunt. Her grandfather had three sons, who were in the army. She does not recall any shortage of food, they had a large garden with an orchard and a field; with 40 apple trees. They had ducks, pigs and the stables held horses for carts. Soldiers marched through the streets when the war was over. At the age of 5, she went to primary school, a board school. Her grandather had taught her to read and write before starting school. Funerals were dramatic (1916-1927).
