Born in Swinton, near Salford. His father was a miner. Thirteen children in the family, but ten died as children, possibly due to malnutrition. Would have to go out at 6am in the morning before school to pick a bucket to keep the fire going.
Began working in the pit at 14, would be in the pit for up to 10 hours. Often had accidents in the pit. Worked in the pit up till age 16. Worked in the mine. He began uncoupling horses, then a drawer, moving full and empty wagons. Became a collier at 19. Sometimes had to work in total darkness. Minimum wage. Saved for his first holiday at age 20, which was unpaid.
Went to a Catholic School, CofE. Learnt religion, geography, history etc. Left school at the age of fourteen. Would play with his friends on his days off.
Four strikes over his time. 1911 strike for minimum wage, 1912 for statute book. |
