Born at Higher Venn, Morchard Bishop, North Devon. His father worked as a horseman, and then for another farm which resulted in the family moving. He has an elder brother and sister, and a younger brother and sister. Lived close to school. Holidays were spent with the father, cutting corn. Regularly went to Sunday School and Church.
Married in March 1910 and had one daughter.
Worked as a horsemen on a farm until 26 years of age. He then worked as a ploughman on a different farm after moving away to the western side of Exe Valley, Triveton. Lastly, he moved to Swansea where he took on a new job away from the farm.
A few mentions of animals from his childhood memories such as a dog at the end of the road who would appear daily, or a fox spotted by the baker. During his childhood, he enjoyed being with the men working with the horses in the field.
The autobiography provides a detailed description of growing up on a farm, and how it influenced the author's decision to continue working as a farmer and then as a ploughman on a farm. Throughout the autobiography, there are many mentions of horses and how they impacted on the author's life, until some of them had to be taken away by the Government for the 1914-18 Great War.
