His family had a history of being in the private service, with his father being the first footman to Princess Mary, and his uncle being a butler in Queen’s Gate.
He frequently spent time at White Lodge, Richmond Park and Kensington Palace, due to his father’s occupation.
Went to a Church school in Kensington till the age of 12.

As a child, he worked on Saturdays as an errand boy.
At 12 years old, he started working as a pantry boy, and went up the ranks to later become a hall-boy, third footman, second footman and first footman for private families.
He eventually became the footman for Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor Great Park.
In 1905, at 28 he became a butler to Mr Wingfield of Ampthill House.

His background, both family and work, involved members of royalty- Princess Mary, the Duchess of Teck and Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein.
He helped host a luncheon party, to which Princess Marie Louise was in attendance.
He went into detail about the private services, detailing the impact of the ‘Great War’ (First World War) on its evolution, as well as providing an appendix to answer general questions.

He actively formed a House Cricket team during his time at Ampthill House.
