Born in Berkeley, Gloucestershire; however, moved around a lot with his family. He had 3 sisters, and 2 brothers. The author has memories of going on walks with his older brother, as well as visiting the Market Place. He reminisces yearly Club Day, which included the arrival of bands, as well as different societies. He talks about many adventures that he experienced as a young boy, such as riding a horse. He attended private school, which he left at the age of 14. He also attended Sunday School with his brother.
He married Sarah Catherine Elley in September, 1893. He met his wife when they were children, whilst visiting his mother's family. They had 4 children together; 2 boys and 2 girls. Before marrying his wife, he was engaged to a daughter of his parents' friend.
At the age of 20, he temporarily worked in the Dock Office. He became a teacher at the Union Church Sunday School, then promoted to the position of Superintendent in 1893.
