She was the fifth child of a family of seven (6 boys and 1 girl). 3 boys died when they were babies. Her parents were interested in their kids having a future; her father believed in apprenticeship to a trade. Her mother and father were unwell, so after she left school, her father asked her to stay home and help with housework. She went to Dame's School until she was 8 years old. Her father died when there was no widows pension. so her mother opened a small shop in Brixton to sell sweets, cigarettes, ice-cream and toffee apples. A few yearslater her mother married a friend of her fathers, and they moved into a flat.
Penrose Street School Every morning recited the books of the Bible; old and new testament. Before arithmetic lesson, they would recite tables from one to twelve. And there were no 11 plus exams so they left school at 14 years of age.
After leaving school at 14 she worked on Denmark Hill for 2 years as an apprentice in dressmaking, in South East London. She worked from 9am to 3pm each weekday, with 1 hour for lunch and 1/2 hour for tea. On Saturdays she worked till 4pm. For this she was paid 6d a week as shewas learning the trade. After 18 months, she got a job as an improver in London at a well- known dressmakers in Regent Street.
Sunday School School Choir Festival every year Would take her fathers dinner to him every Saturday.
