Born Southerham, near Lewes, Sussex 1826 The son of a shepherd. Became his mothers helper to nurse the baby, clean the house, and do sewing. All which prevented him from playing with other boys and going to school.

Had very little schooling For a short time went to a dame's school, and then for a little while to the British School at Lewes.
Employed at 8 years old, during the summer. Worked to scare the birds from the corn etc. For which he had a shilling a week. When 10 years old, he was taken from school entirely to help his father as a shepherd-boy. For which he earned 2 shillings per week. A devoted congregation provided him with a house and a chapel at Heathfield, Sussex, where he was a pastor for 40 years. He also practised as a herbalist, having a dispensary and treating patients for many miles around.
Sunday-School Taught the church catechism on Sunday afternoon, and instructed to use the Lord's prayer. |
