Rowles describes early life experiences, including growing up in Edware Road and later moving to Fulham. He recalls social distinctions at school, the struggles of a working-class upbringing, and experiences of delivering milk and working at a greengrocer from a young age.

Attended Langford Road Board School but struggled academically except in English composition and scripture.
Won a Bible prize for knowledge of Joshua’s military exploits.
Later received informal education from his father, who taught his basic reading and writing.

Rowles initially worked as a telegraph messenger but was unable to enlist in the Royal Navy due to shortsightedness.
Eventually apprenticed to a local printer, later gaining experience in various printing houses and newspapers, including the Uxbridge Gazette.
Rowles became involved in the printing industry, working on magazines, local newspapers, and trade journals before serving in the army.
After being wounded in World War I, he transitioned to editorial proofreading and freelance writing

Played the harmonium, served as a chapel organist, and enjoyed composing short stories.
Showed great interest in typography, journalism, and historical printing techniques.
Actively involved in trade unions and printing industry advocacy.

Served in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers during WWI, sustaining serious injuries that led to disability. Worked extensively in various roles across the printing and publishing industries. Played an important role in the London Society of Compositors and other trade unions.
