Grew up in Norwich. Went to Carrow School, owned by the Colman family; no caning used there.
Attended Carrow School, then transferred to Higher Grade School. Won a “Science and Art” scholarship worth £40. Passed Senior Oxford examination. Became a pupil teacher at age 16 in 1908. Studied at Pupil Teachers’ Centre in St George’s Street. Gained Teacher’s Certificate with distinctions in English, Drawing, and Science.
Started as a Pupil Teacher at Surrey Road Girls School (1908). Became fully qualified teacher, worked at St. Peter Parmentergate Senior Mixed School (1910). Continued teaching until 1914. Reappointed temporarily during WWI after marriage (1915). Taught again after 1940 during WWII at Larkman Lane Primary School under Mr. George Lyon. Retired in 1952 after 12 years at Larkman Lane.
Married in 1915. Husband joined forces and served abroad during WWI. Had three sons, stopped teaching to raise them. Husband died of tuberculosis in 1940.

Jubilee of Queen Victoria celebration at Carrow Abbey (childhood). WWI outbreak and husband’s service. Husband’s deployment to Alexandria, absence for 3 years. Resumed teaching during WWII amidst air raid warnings and shelter duties. Retired in 1952.
