Born in a cottage at Hoylus End, near Keighley.
Grew up on a farm with his parents.
Attended National School at Keighley, and a Sunday School.
He also attended a night school in Greengate, and then in Fell-lane.

No mention of marriage.

His first job was as a warp-dresser.
He also worked as a sailor, apprentice to a mason, player in a theatre company, scenic artist, stage manager, showman, and a dock labourer.
He enlisted in the army for three years.
He was also a poet, and an author of plays and comic stories.

Throughout his childhood, the author tried out many different hobbies such as tight-rope walking, playing the fiddle, acting (as well as joining an amateur dramatic society), sculpting, carving figures, etc.

The autobiography discusses the life of the author, whilst also providing different poems throughout it.

The autobiography is typed-written.
