He grew up in a small rural village of Walton. He attended Walton School in 1876. He attended Sunday School. He left the Walton School in 1889 to enter the St. John's College as a top student. He became a Senior Monitor in his second year whilst at College.
He became a Pupil Teacher at the age of 12. He passed the Queen's Scholarship Examination which gained him the 14th place on the list of all Pupil Teachers in England, Scotland and Wales.
He participated in an exhibition of botany, nature and wild flowers. He would play cricket and hockey with his friends.
