She left school in 1900, at the age of 12 to help with selling milk.

As a child, she would attend singing school, Band of Hope, and competitive meetings which took place on Saturday evening.
She attended Sunday School.
She enjoyed playing hop-scotch, skiping and buttons with other girls.
She went to the movies with her friends, which they called 'living pictures'.

The autobiography focuses on the author's childhood before she had to leave school to start working.
The autobiography also focuses on living in a village, and what it was like growing up there for the author.
