Born in Somerset.
She was a daughter of a farm worker.
She had two brothers, and three sisters.

She worked as a domestic servant.
She then went into munition work at Luton in 1915, where she disclosed her abilities as an organiser and administrator.
She was moved to a machine-shop, where she was to use a press for pressing detonators.
She worked at the spinning room, which was used to test the springs of the fuses.
She was then in charge of a small inspecting shop.
She also became a trade unionist, and in 1928, she became a full-time officer of the Workers' Union (later named the Transport and General Workers' Union).
She then retired in 1951.

With munition work, she was finally able to experience freedom that she had not known for a long time.
She arranged parties for the chargehands and forewomen, in the town, each Saturday night.

The autobiography discusses how the First World War brought involvement in society, increased earnings, and independence, as well as emancipation for the author as well as many other women.

The autobiography is typed written.
