He was born in Moudon, Switzerland.
His father was a Professor of Languages who died three days after he was born.
He moved to England in 1898.
His cousin, who worked as a Queen's dresser, helped him receive the appenticeship at the Buckingham Palace.

At the age of 16 he became an apprentice to the Royal Chef at Buckingham Palace.
He then became a master cook.
He then became a Chef to the Duke of Portland at Welbeck Abbey from 1933 to 1943.
His last appointment was as a Royal Chef to Queen Mary at Marlborough House.
He then retired in 1952.

Working as the last apprentice at the Buckingham Palace, gave him the opportunity to travel a bit.

The autobiography discusses how the author, at the age of 16, went on a journey from Switzerland to England in order to become an apprentice at the Buckingham Palace.
