If a street was covered with six inches of straw it meant that somewhere opposite the straw cushion was a house containing a sick person who needed quietness to aid recovery. The straw would deaden the sound of horse traffic which was the order of the day. 1914 - The terriorial army was in camp. Constant flow of hospital trains bringing wouded from the front to all big towns, straining the hospitals to to their limit.
