Born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Mother (Sarah Duffill) died in 1877 after childbirth. Father (Samuel William Lay), an artist and coach painter, placed Alfred and his siblings in an orphanage. Never saw his father again.
No formal education mentioned, early life transitions quickly to apprenticeship.
Apprenticed at age 16 in Grimsby on the silvery spray (started 6 June 1883). Gained his Mate's Ticket 1893. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1914; became a contractor for haymaking and cartage. His sons became orchardists.
Married Kate Short in 1892. Four sons: Alfred, Edgar, Stanley and Frank .
Fishing, steam lunch ventures, ocean travel. No specific hobbies listed, but clearly adventurous.
Detailed jouney in 1900 to acqure and sail and sail a steam launch from lonfon to Grimdny - an intenxe and dangerous. Attempted jouney in 1900 to start a pier-side steam launch business in Grimsby, initially rejected by poor authoirities. Immigrated to New Zealand in 1914 and resettled into agricultural contracting.
