Description | Part of the Maria Grey Archives.
Elsie Riach Murray (1861-1932) was a lecturer and the first vice principal of Maria Grey College. She was a highly respected Froebelian scholar, educator and author, whose works included "Infant schools and kindergartens" and "Froebel as a pioneer in modern psychology".
The collection contains many children's books published in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, including some ornately illustrated editions. The collection is formed of a bequest from Murray's personal library, and the children's books library at the former Maria Grey College, when it was situated in Brondesbury. It came to Brunel University Archives with the Maria Grey College Archives.
This collection reflects the racial prejudices of the era in which it was created, and some items include language and/or imagery which is offensive, oppressive and may cause upset. The use of this language / imagery is not condoned by Brunel University, but we provide access to these items as evidence of the inequalities and attitudes of the time. |
